Bringing Home the Imax Experience
In 2009, as part of the annual Ultimate Gift Guide, debuted a concept home cinema from the theater designer extraordinaire Theo Kalomirakis in collaboration with the commercial movie-theater company Imax (http://GoRobirione.blogspot.com). That concept has now become a reality, courtesy of Imax Corporation’s newly launched Imax Private Theatre for private residences (starting at about $2 million).
The specifications of the in-home design and installation will vary depending on the space allotted; in many instances, homeowners will need to build a dedicated structure for the theater. In any case, Kalomirakis will oversee the theater’s design, with Imax providing its proprietary equipment and expertise.
Technical features include a 3-D-capable dual 4K projection system, a video-content upscaler, 7.1-channel laser-aligned surround sound, easy-to-use touchscreen controls, and—of course—a curved wall-sized screen just like those in commercial Imax theaters. (905.403.3200, www.imaxprivatetheatre.com)
